Philanthropist Laurene Powell Job, the widow of Steve Jobs, has teamed up with Leonardo DiCaprio to help save the planet.
Their new non-profit environmental organization is called the Earth Alliance. It will “work globally to protect ecosystems and wildlife, ensure climate justice, support renewable energy and secure indigenous rights to the benefit of all life on Earth.”
Earth Alliance will hand out grants and educational opportunities. It will also create films and advertising campaigns to raise awareness about topics like climate change. Powell Jobs is the president of the Emerson Collective, a social impact organization.
DiCaprio has long been involved with environmental sustainability projects. His Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation has handed out around $100 million in grants. It will be folded into the Earth Alliance as part of this new initiative.
Powell Jobs and DiCaprio will also be joined by Brian Sheth, co-founder and president of private equity firm Vista Equity Partners.
While Powell Jobs isn’t directly involved with Apple, the topic of environmentalism is something both she and Apple have actively pursued. Apple is frequently singled out as the most environmentally friendly tech company out there. (Ironically, under Steve Jobs it was frequently lambasted for being the opposite.)
Powell Jobs and Apple have also crossed over in other domains. Recently, her Emerson Collective organization invested in Hello Sunshine, the production company owned by actress Reese Witherspoon. The company is making three shows for Apple’s TV+ streaming service.
According to Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Laurene Powell Jobs has a net worth of $19.2 billion.
