DJI, the biggest drone company in the world, is ready to go toe-to-toe with GoPro in pursuit of dominating the action cam market.
The company unveiled its new Osmo Action camera this morning that is aimed at competing directly with GoPro’s Hero 7 camera and it packs some interesting new features that the Hero 7 can’t match.
The DJI Osmo Action cam is supposed to be both rugged and sophisticated. It’s dustproof, shockproof, waterproof and can withstand sub-freezing temperatures. It’s also the first DJI handheld camera to include RockSteady, DJI’s Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) technology.
What stands out most on the Osmo Action is its dual screen design. On the front, you’ll find a 1.4-inch screen that makes selfies and vlogging easier. The backside packs 2.25-inch touchscreen. There are three buttons on the body for recording, power and navigating through content.
DJI moves in on GoPro
“DJI has always pushed the limits of technology, and the content creators who love our products made clear they wanted us to push the limits of their creative potential too. Osmo Action is our cutting-edge answer to what the creative community demands: Exceptional image quality and stabilization in a unique and durable new form factor, with dual color screens and seamless software integration,” said DJI President, Roger Luo.
Osmo Action uses a 1/2.3-inch sensor that snaps 12-megapixel photos and shoots 4K video up to 60fps at 100Mbps. It can also shoot 1080p video up to 120fps. DJI is also throwing in ND filters and polarizers so you can capture amazing footy right out of the box.
Of course, DJI also threw in some intelligent features like slo-mo, timelapse and the ability to manually adjust exposure settings so you can try to take night shots. The Osmo Action goes on sale today for $349 and will be available at authorized sellers starting May 22.
